So you want to ride track? You dont want to show up at the track and look like a total beginner. You want to “ARRIVE” at the track, you dont want to just show up. So let me share with you some of the PROness that I’ve gleaned since cutting my teeth at the track as a young junior. 1. Rollers for warming up - real trackies dont ride trainers You must arrive at the track in your athletic sweats provided by some PRO organization. -End of First Installment of “How to look PRO at the Track”- |
The numbers…

Climb to Kaiser 2008
July 21, 2008 on 8:02 am | In Cycling | No CommentsOnce again we embarked on the CtK adventure… This year with a LOT more preparation and thought.
Overall it went very well. I placed 4th which is a great improvement over last year. My ride time was 9hr28min and some change. Next year the goal is to run around 9hours ride time with minimal time at the stops gathering food. This year I spent about 14 minutes gathering food which seems reasonable for the 155 mile trek. I hope to get that time down to around 10 minutes next year. Obvously that depends on the weather.
This year I road a Cannondale Six13 which turned out to be a pretty nice ride. I used the new ProRace3 tires was was equally pleased with their performace. No cuts no flats. Can’t complain.
Ride Report for Mt. Shasta Century..
August 14, 2007 on 7:33 am | In Cycling | No CommentsSince my ‘race’ training has been side lined due to my new work situation I’ve been enjoying? a few tough centuries… The Mt. Shasta Century didn’t disappoint with 135 miles and 16,500 feet of climbing it was nearly as hard as the Climb To Kaiser…
I left Hollister on Saturday morning and headed up to Redding to spend the evening with my grandmother. Sunday woke at 4am and made the trek to Mt. Shasta for the start.. I got up there and ended up rolling out by 6:30am.. A little later than I had hoped but it was probably better because I had forgotten my arm warmers and gloves. The start was a cool 49* ! ack.. So it was a cold start to the day in shorts and jersey! The first few miles are rolling but at mile 12 things start heading up. For the next 14 miles you roll up and down and climb 3800ft to an elevation of 6854ft.. Its mainly up! Luckily the sun was warming the valley and the skies were clear so I warmed up nicely. Going up this first climb there was a nasty crash which put a gloom over the day. Someone had hit a pothole on the downhill and really crashed hard. I found out later in the day that the person was OK. I really don’t like to see another guy down but thankfully he was OK.. This first climb was probably the easiest of the day and once you get to the top you make a U turn and head back down the hill.
The next climb is more of a bump than anything. It rose about 900ft in 10 miles. After a short downhill the next real climb started near mile 60. For the next 13 miles we climbed up a really pretty valley to a final elevation of 6600ft. There were some very steep pitches that started in around mile 70. This kind of separated the group and I was able to get a nice rhythm for the next 3 miles until I got to the summit… I should mention that the ride was decently supported at each summit with food, sodas and aid stations if you needed them.
After the rest stop I proceeded to head downhill.. The downhill was very twisty and NARROW. With lots of people heading uphill it was a fairly spooky descent. I took my time for the most part..
At mile 90 we got to one of the harder climbs of the day. It was short but after 90 miles and already a LOT of climbing it was getting interesting. This was a 7mile climb good for another 2200ft elevation gain.. Kind of steep but ALL exposed.
Of course what we all came for was the final climb of the day and that took us from 3000ft to 7720ft in 15 miles. This was Mt. Shasta.. If you haven’t done it its a really nice ride but after 100miles I was starting to feel it. I held a decent pace of slightly over 200W for most of the climb but with 2 miles to go I started to fall apart. I drank lots of Perpetuem and had a gel during this slog
and I DO mean slog.. I was way down on power around 175-180W and barely able to turn the pedals.. With one mile to go I felt a little better and was able to crank it back up near 200W. THEN the hammer fell. With ~250m left I could hardly turn the pedals. Making barely 175W I crossed the summit and sucked a gel down and had some fruit.
I knew at this point 119 miles into the ride it was only a downhill (14 miles of downhill actually) to get back to the car so I pointed downhill and started rolling. Mt Shasta has fantastic pavement and 50mph is easy to hit. The top is SUPER chilly after the long ascent so bring warm gear.. I would have put it on if I had it… Mental note: do not forget your stuff please next time..
Overall A really nice ride, support wasn’t quite as nice as Climb To Kaiser but I would totally do it again. Scenery was great, nice pavement what else could you ask for!
Climb to Kaiser ride report
July 6, 2007 on 12:22 pm | In Cycling | No CommentsThe ride starts at 0530 sharp and rolls out behind motorcycle escort through Clovis. Luckily for us the weather was very nice. Even at 5:30AM there was no need for warmers, gloves, hats, etc. The pace was pretty fast and the testosterone level was high. 28mph was not uncommon for the first 20 miles or so.The first climb comes in at around mile 20 and in ernest by mile 23. This is the Wildcat grade climb. Its is 4 miles with avg grade of 5%. At this point most of the 300+ people were still together and the going was dicy at best. Most of the folks are non racers apparently. The object of the game was to stay near the front hopefully with people that were better bike handlers. anyway, this climbs 900′ if you do the ride be careful through here. Don’t overlap wheels or the guy in front of you will stand up shoot his guy backwards and then knock you down.
The next climb over Burrough Grade starts at miles 31.5.. This is another 900′ climb. By now most of the casual riders had dropped off.
The first “big” climb of the day begins at mile 41. This is the famed Tollhouse grade climb and runs nearly 7 miles and climbs 2700′ with avg grade of 7%. Steepest section was 19% .. This climb is really not all that bad and rolling into the 50 mile rest stop I was feeling pretty good.
After tollhouse grade you end up on Hwy 168. On 168 there was a LOT of boat traffic. Most people were courteous however there were a couple folks pulling giant party-barge things that got a little too close for my comfort. The climb continues up to Shaver Lake rest stop. Another 1400′ climb down.
After Shaver rest stop you head on up to Big Creek Grade. This is about the most insane climb I’ve ever done. It starts out easy enough and breaks at a rest stop. From that rest stop to Huntington Lake it is 4.5 miles of the gnarliest stuff ever. Avg grade is 10%, the worst .5 mile section was 15% and the steepest grade is 20%. You climb 2000 feet in those 4.5 miles. Once complete you hit another rest stop. Much needed. By now the reports were in that 2 people were off trying to break the course record. They were 20 minutes ahead of me at this point.
From the rest stop its yet morel uphill to our final and highest destination. Kaiser Pass… Kaiser pass is a 7.5 mile climb shooting you up 2300′ more to an elevation of 9200′. Avg grade is 7%, worst 1/2mile is 12% and steepest section is near the end at 18% ON GRAVEL! Sweet. The downhill is fantastic! The rest stop at Kaiser Pass has everything you need to fuel you up for the rest of the day. The “race leaders” passed me going down while I was still chugging up. Caught up with Gary Frank at the top of the climb and howdy’d for a minute.
Once you finish the downhill from Kaiser you enter a series of rollers on Tamarack Ridge. This climb is a piece of cake but lasts 9 miles and climbs 1300′.. At Tamarack ridge you are back on Hwy168 and descend into Shaver Lake.
From there you make your way back to Clovis on mostly downhills and flat sections.
The support/sag/food/everything on this ride is first rate. Its an expensive entry fee so one would expect this. People parked your bike, cleaned your glasses, filled your bottles. Hammer nutrition supplied drinks, gels you name it.
Overall I ended up with 155 miles and 14,800ft elevation gain. Next year I’m going to put the hammer down and see how fast I can go. I ran a 39/27 and was glad I had that 27 for the Big Creek climb. I think 9hrs30min is possible and maybe can do faster.
I can say without a doubt if you do this ride you wont be disappointed by the scenery or the hospitality.
It’s official..
March 1, 2007 on 11:03 am | In Cycling | No CommentsI just got my CAT3 sticker in the mail.. I’m pretty happy with the upgrade as I’ve finished the last 3 races I’ve done by winning them!
First race in the 3’s will be this Sunday at Merco Hill Road Race.. The field it GIGANTIC. Over 115 people. Should be fun. Stay tuned for the race report.

Jim Bonnet Race Report:
This is a pretty nice course with about 620ft elevation gain per lap according to my PolarHRM… This all comes in the last 2 miles or so I’d guess. Decent pavement and no traffic. The last couple years it has been either raining sideways or snowing so the weather we were treated to was nothing short of spectacular.
25-30 of us started out at a decent pace due to the downhill which strung out the group on the first leg. I figured I’d watch the 4 or 5 STbikes guys that were in the field with myself and match their attacks and reserve enough energy to attack the final climb.
Right from the start 1 person took off. This guy got wrapped up in the 3’s group ahead of us and according to another SJBC’er that was in that group he was riding with them! That is not cool… He did get reel’ed in at the end so no need for protests or anything like that.
My strategy worked out pretty well. The pack was whittled down(except for the lone dude with another group)and by the climb on the second lap we were down to about 10. Of these 10 there were still 2 ST guys. The pace had settled down in the 21ish range for the most part and on the third lap I tried to push the pace.. I would take some strong 60second pulls at around 24mph+ to try and string things out. What ended up happening is that I’d scoot over after my pull and the pace would slow to 21mph again right away… I’d go to the front and do 24 again..
On the last leg ST put in a couple of really hard attacks before the climb. This worried me a little as I was getting pretty tired and was OUT of water. I sat in as best I could until the overpass. At the overpass I went hard again. At 1km I was 1st but was getting fatigued.. 3 or 4 guys came around me. I settled into my climbing rhythm and waited.. ST attacked leaving one ST rider out in front. At 200m left I was feeling strong and decided I couldn’t wait longer if I was going to win this thing. Shifted in the bigring and went for it. I think I beat out the ST rider by about a bike length for 1st place.
This was my longest race ever I think and it _REALLY_ hurt the rest of the day..
Thanks for reading.

February 2, 2007 on 8:09 am | In Cycling | No CommentsWell I clocked in at 932.69 miles with 4 sick days and one race day in January. 1019 miles down in December
January 10, 2007 on 11:34 am | In Cycling | No CommentsWell mission accomplished.. Hit 1000 miles on the last training day of the year. 29 Days on the bike done mostly outside. There were a few days on the trainer.
The first race of the new year has now come and gone as well. I did the Uvas loop race with the San Jose Bike Club guys this past weekend. Moved along at a pretty decent clip. It was nice to get out and do some speed work.
January is shaping up to be another 1000 mile month so far. We shall see how it goes.
December goals….
December 8, 2006 on 4:02 pm | In Cycling | No CommentsSo I’ve decided to wrap the year up with a 1000 mile month.. Yeah, I should have been doing these all along you may say.. I almost hit it in October. Missed by a few miles. So I have been close… Yesterday was a fantastically warm sunny day. Got in 40 miles in just under 2 hours. I’m closing in on 300 miles for the week. Its going to start raining here soon so it will be a trainer night.. Fun.
Here’s a super ugly cellphone self portrait out on Highway 25:

Light & Motion ARC Li-ion Ultra
November 17, 2006 on 1:35 pm | In Cycling | No CommentsI picked up one of these lights just a few days ago. I am _very_ impressed with the quality of light and the way this thing is put together. The light is for sure one of the cream of the crop lights out there. It’s an HID light that puts out 13.5 watts, 675 lumens for an amazing 5! hours.
Included in the kit is everything you need to get right down to some serious night riding. Initially the battery has a charge to it however its probably about 1/2 way charged. I put the battery on the charger that was in the kit and it took about 4 hours to get it up to full charge. The kit comes with a super nice charger with LED’s that tell you what it is doing at all times. You can also leave the batter plugged into the charger all the time so it is ready to go. Also, the battery does not have to be fully discharged before plugging into the charger. Can it get any easier?
I can’t wait to go do more night riding now… Since it is dark at 4:30 I think this light will get some good use this winter.
BMC Road Racer
November 17, 2006 on 1:09 pm | In Cycling | No CommentsI’ve picked up a BMC Road Racer SL01 in Black and Silver. I’ve pulled all the parts from the Cervelo Soloist and will put them on this new BMC frame.. In reality the Cervelo cracked around the seat tube after only 4 months of use. Cervelo went ahead and did a warranty on it however they did not have any of the red frames to send me. I did not care for the black annodized frame and was offered a credit at the shop where I purchased the Cervelo… Long story short I ended up with the BMC.I just unpacked it from the box last night and it looks OK. The paint isn’t what I had expected however. It is not perfect like the Look frames have been. There are a few little scratches from handling and things like that. Overall not bad just not great. Came with an Easton EA50 seatpost, an EC70 fork and an FSA headset. A friend gave me the carbon post which is an FSA. It should help smooth out the ride.

Look 595 - The first rides
October 5, 2006 on 9:40 am | In Cycling | No CommentsSo I *finally* finished building the 595. I wont list my excuses for not building this fantastic rig but will get right to the review.
First off this bike takes off from a stop like a bat out of hell. It is such a quick accelerating bike that I can not believe it. Much faster than the 585 with the same wheelset and components.
Second, the bottom bracket area is stiff. VERY stiff. Climbing is effortless… Well, maybe not effortless
but you know what I mean.
The integrated seat post is really cool. The cutting was scary to say the least but worked out OK in the end. The little jig they provide works well. Do heed the directions if at all possible and make your cut toward the ground. Not as I did.. I cut parallel to the ground and ended up with a little wavy cut. I was able to fix it using a sanding block. I had to cut in this fashion because my Tacx stand doesn’t allow you to move the frame around to get the seat tube in the correct position.. Oh well.
I’ve put in 100 miles on the bike so far and am very pleased.
Happy riding-
Jim
RAIN!
October 4, 2006 on 2:48 pm | In Cycling | No CommentsUgh… It’s started already. Went out for a short ride this afternoon and met up with the rain. Looks like it will be wet the next couple of days and then back to our normally scheduled weather pattern.
